Olympic Gold Medalist and UT Longhorn track star Sanya Richards-Ross retired last year, and now she and her husband Aaron Ross, a former New York Giant and UT Longhorn football player, have embarked on a new challenge: parenthood.
Richards-Ross is due in August with their first child — a son.
Parenthood and retirement from sports is changing where they are in their life and what goals they have for the future. This weekend,Richards-Ross is partnering with Capital One Bank to be spokeswoman for Capital One’s Banking Reimagined Tour. A 54-foot trailer will be at The Domain from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The trailer allows you to digitally establish what your goals are for the future and then see how to financially get there. It’s got all the bells and whistles including augmented reality and 3D features. In a video selfie booth, you can even record a video to your future self to remind you what you need to be doing financially.
The Rosses, who now live in Round Rock, will be there Saturday afternoon to set their own financial future. “It meets you where you are,” she says. “It takes away the anxiety. It puts your life goals first and then helps you to figure out how to get there financially.”
Even Olympic stars and NFL athletes need that.
“For me, for so long, I kind of entrusted my finances to other people,” she says. “Now that Ross (as she calls her husband) and I are now retired … there is a power and confidence about learning about your personal finances … whether you have a lot of money or are just starting out.”
The Reimagined Tour is one part of Capital One’s plan to reimagine banking. Also coming in the winter to Austin are Capital One Cafes that will feature digital tools as well as humans to help you plan your financial future as well as coffee.
Sanya Richards-Ross is busy planning for her future. She now works with NBC covering track meets. You might have seen her in that role for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
It’s still weird for her to head to the booth instead of suiting up and getting ready to run when she attends these events, but she says, “I don’t miss the training, I absolutely don’t miss the competition. It does feel weird. I ran for 24 years of my life.”
“I’m also enjoying the transition. I knew eventually it was going to come to an end.”
Now that she’s retired from track, she’s focusing on her Gold Standard Foundation, which helps students at LBJ High School to be empowered through sports. She’s hoping to replicate their Prom Glam Empowerment program at Reagan High School next year and then grow it to other schools.
She’s also an owner with her sister of Hair Clinic salon and with her family of Ross Elite Chauffeur.
Richards-Ross continues working out, even in pregnancy. She goes to the gym to do weight training. She still does some cardio on a bike and a StairMaster she has in her home gym, but whenever she doesn’t feel like working out, she doesn’t.
“I listening to my body,” she says. “I want to stay healthy for me and the baby.”
It’s been an easy pregnancy so far, though in the beginning she was exhausted. She would wake up, write a couple of emails and go back to sleep for two or three hours, she says.
She’s also been craving salads, not the pizza she thought she’d be craving. She was hoping her son would make her eating more adventurous, but not really. She still drinks a ton of water, eats meals that are high in protein, eats a hardy breakfast, the same way she did when she was competing. What she isn’t doing is drinking protein shakes and juices. And she no longer eats five times a day.
Richards-Ross says she knows there might be a lot of external pressure on her son to be an athlete, but she’ll let him wait to decide what he wants to do, just like she and her husband were allowed to do. They came from a family of athletes: moms who ran track, dads who played football and soccer, but she says she never knew about her mom’s track career until she was older and Aaron Ross didn’t start playing football until his junior year of high school.
“Ross and I certainly found sports on our own,” she says.
Aaron Ross has already talked about their son not starting football at a young age, especially not contact football. They’re aware of all the new information out there about head injuries and safety. Aaron Ross had one really bad concussion in the NFL, she says, so it’s a concern.
